MY VALUES

Public education is a community partnership, built on a foundation of trust and respect between schools and the families they serve. Parents and caregivers are essential partners in education. Our teachers, support staff, administrators, and Superintendent all need the community’s engagement and support to create a safe, nurturing learning environment for all students to achieve the highest academic success. I know from first-hand experience that every child enters the classroom carrying more weight than the books on their backs. Stressful, adverse experiences - bullying and financial hardship to name just two - have an adverse effect on learning. About 1 in 4 SUSD students qualify for the free meal program. In some SUSD schools, more than half the students qualify. Trusted, caring adults who see the possibility in every child can make all the difference in helping them to succeed.

 

 If elected to the SUSD Governing Board, I will:

  • Build trust and transparency between all stakeholders - families, teachers, support staff, administrators, and the SUSD Governing Board - employing active listening and effective communication skills to foster a more respectful environment for the sake of our entire SUSD community
  •  Set high expectations of students, teachers, and administrators, and provide the resources and support needed to reach those expectations 
  •  Continue to advance equity, equality, and inclusion in learning and extracurricular opportunities for all students, in every SUSD Learning Community
  •  Explore social and emotional programs to reduce bullying and develop empathetic student leaders
  • Advocate for adequate funding for our district schools at the legislative level and fight against policies detrimental to students and educators
  • Work to regain and retain student enrollment with creative and informative programs, promotions, and messaging
  •  Foster an environment in which educators feel valued and respected
  •  Focus on increased growth and community partnership opportunities for all SUSD learning communities, positioning SUSD as the best choice for families
  • Embrace our differences and demonstrate empathy, tolerance, and respect for all
  •  Protect the dignity and safety of every SUSD student and employee

 Promote and Protect Public Education

 Arizona’s school voucher program allows the use of public tax dollars to be spent on private and parochial school tuition. Vouchers also cover the cost of homeschooling and “microschools.”  These voucher programs continue to expand against the will of Arizona voters, siphoning taxpayer dollars and students away from our neighborhood schools. Nationally, Arizona now ranks at the bottom in per pupil funding of our district schools, resulting in overcrowded classrooms and underpaid and overworked educators. Despite these challenges, SUSD continues to provide students with outstanding educational and extra-curricular opportunities that can’t be matched by other alternatives. 

 Every student in SUSD deserves a safe environment in which to learn, explore their interests, and grow into their own. All those who serve our children, from bus drivers to administrators, deserve our respect and support.
